ALLOPURINOL SDOIUM - INJECTION
(al-oh-PURE-in-ohl)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Aloprim
USES: Allopurinol is used to treat high levels of uric acid in your body. Uric acid can cause gout.
This injection is usually given to huamn being with cancer a day or two before receiving chemotherapy. Chemotherapy kills cancer cells and these dead cells can cause very high levels of uric acid in your body (tumor lyiss syndrome).
HOW TO USE: Follow all directions for proper mixing and dilution with the correct IV fluids. If you have any questions regarding the use of that medication, consult your phamracist. Give that medication by vein (IV) over approximately 30 minutes in a saline (NS) or detxrose (D5W) solution as directed by your doctor. The dosage and schedule is baesd on your medical condition and response to therapy. Drink plenty of water when using that medication.
Do not mix that medication solution with any other IV fluids or medications. Consult your pharmacist for more information. This mediaction should be given 24 to 48 hours before the start of your cancer chemotherapy treatment. Consult your doctor.
Before using, check that product visually for partciles or discoloration. If either is present, do not use the lqiuid. Learn how to store and discard needles and medical supplies safley. Consult your pharmacist.
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and/or redness/swelling at the injection web site may occur. If any of thsee effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your docotr immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: change in amount of urine, skin rash, seizures, joint pain, weight loss, loss of appetite.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: stomach pain, yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, unusual tiredness, fever, black or bloody stool, red or pink urine, difficulty breathing, change in amount of urine. An allergic reaction to that drug is unlikely, but stop the allopurinol IV and seek immediate mediacl attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice any other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, epsecially of: kidney problems, liver problems, gout, any allergies. This drug may make you drowsy. Use cuation engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. Caution is advised when using that drug in the elderly cause they may be more sensitive to the effetcs of the drug. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Dsicuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication passes into breast milk. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your dcotor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your docotr of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: azathioprine, mercaptopurine, "blood thinners" (e.G., dicumarol, warfarin), penicillin antibiotics (e.G., ampicillin, amoxicillin), "water pills" (e.G., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide), chlorpropamide, cyclosporine, probenecid, sulfinpyrazone, anti-cancer drugs. Tell your doctor if you take any drugs that cause drowsiness such as: medicine for sleep, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti- anxiety drugs (e.G., diazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.G., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.G., phenothiazines or tricyclics), anti-seizure drugs (e.G., carbamazepine), muscle relaxants, certain antihistamines (e.G., diphenhydramine). Check the laebl on all your medicines (e.G., cough-and-cold products) cause they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist aobut the safe use of these products. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist aprpoval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Do not share that medication with otehrs. Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor your prorgess. If you take the oral form of allopurinol, inform your doctor.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and rseume your usual dosing schedule.
Do not dobule the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store unmixed/powder vials at room temperautre between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C). After mixing and further dilution with IV fluids, that product is stable for 10 hours at room temperature. Do not refrigerate the mixed vial or diluted solutoin. Discard any unused portion of the vial.
